A former railroad bridge converted into a 1.28-mile elevated walkway 212 feet above the Hudson River. Fully accessible, flat, panoramic views in every direction. The Poughkeepsie side connects to the Heritage Trail for extended walking or biking. Free to walk.

Storm King Art Center (Cornwall)
A 500-acre outdoor sculpture museum in the Hudson Highlands with over 100 large-scale works by Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, Andy Goldsworthy, and many others. The landscape itself is extraordinary — rolling hills, ponds, and mountain views frame the sculpture. Tram tours available for those who prefer not to walk the full property.

Dia:Beacon
A contemporary art museum in a converted 1929 Nabisco printing factory on the Hudson River in Beacon. The scale of the building itself — 300,000 square feet of skylights — is extraordinary. The Dan Flavin fluorescent light installation and Richard Serra's massive steel sculptures are the landmarks. Not every exhibit is child-appropriate; the building and major permanent works always are.

Apple Picking (Fishkill Farms or Migliorelli Farm)
The Hudson Valley apple season runs from late August (early varieties) through October (late-season apples and pumpkins). Fishkill Farms in Dutchess County and Migliorelli Farm in Tivoli are the most family-friendly operations. Wagon rides, cider donuts, farm markets, and miles of apple rows.

Rhinebeck Village
A four-block main street that qualifies as one of the best small town experiences in New York. The Beekman Arms — operating as an inn since 1766 — anchors one end. Independent bookshops, cheese stores, excellent restaurants, and a century-old movie theater fill the street. Beautiful in every season.

Boscobel House & Gardens (Garrison)
A restored Federal-period mansion on the Hudson with spectacular river views, formal gardens, and a very good audio tour. The setting — 36 acres above the Hudson Highlands — is one of the most beautiful house museum properties in New York. The Shakespeare theater on the grounds hosts summer performances.
